Men's Lacrosse 2024: Facts, Figures And Records From Another Championship Season
May 12, 2024 | Men's Lacrosse
The 2024 Princeton men's lacrosse season came to an end Saturday night with an NCAA tournament opening round loss at Maryland. For Princeton, it was a third-straight trip to the NCAA tournament, including one Final Four, as well as a second-straight Ivy League tournament championship.
In addition to the team success, it was a year of big numbers, interesting numbers, rookie numbers and all-time numbers. Among them are:
* Andrew McMeekin, a sophomore, broke the school record for ground balls in a season with 132, one better than Greg Waller's 131 in 1991 and two better than Zach Currier's 130 in 2017. McMeekin, the Most Outstanding Player of the Ivy tournament, also had 199 face-off wins, third-best in a season at Princeton, trailing Waller's 207 in 1990 and Tyler Sandoval's 202 in 2022. McMeekin also scored eight goals and had two assists.
* Nate Kabiri finished his freshman season with 32 goals (second-best ever by a Princeton freshman) and 25 assists (fourth) for 57 points (also second). Kabiri is the only Division I freshman with at least 30 goals and 25 assists, and he is second among D1 freshmen in points, as well as the sixth Princeton player ever with at least 32G, 25A in a season.
* Colin Burns had 26 goals, making him and Nate Kabiri the first pair of Princeton freshmen ever to both have at least 25 goals.
* Tucker Wade had 17 goals, the fourth-best total by a Princeton freshman midfielder. Wade, Burns and Kabiri combined for 75 goals, making this the highest scoring freshman class in Division I and the highest-scoring freshman class in program history.
* Princeton scored 211 goals and allowed 167 goals in 2024. Princeton scored 211 goals and allowed 166 goals in 2023.
* Princeton has had three of its top seven scoring offense seasons in program history since Jim Mitchell has been the offensive coordinator.
* Michael Gianforcaro made 205 saves this season, tying for sixth-best in program history. Gianforcaro also scored Princeton's first goal by a goalie since Alex Hewit in 2008.
* Michael Bath had 26 caused turnovers, the second-highest single-season total in program history, trailing only Chad Wiedmaier's 34 in 2012.
* Chad Palumbo finished his sophomore season with 26 goals and 11 assists. His goal total is the highest for any Princeton sophomore who had two or fewer as a freshman.
* Princeton won 222 face-offs and lost 215. It's the first time since 2012 Princeton has been over .500 for a season.
* Princeton commited 26 penalties, the fewest penalties Princeton has ever commited in a season.
* And then there's Coulter Mackesy. The junior attackman had 40 goals and 24 assists, making him the third player (along with Michael Sowers and Kevin Lowe) in program history to have two seasons of at least 64 points. He now has 123 goals and 62 assists for his career; only one other player in program history has ever achieved those numbers (Mikey MacDonald). His 123 goals rank fifth all-time at Princeton, leaving him exactly 40 away from Jesse Hubbard's school record, which has stood since 1998. He is also ninth all-time at Princeton in caerer points (185); should he match the 54 points he had this year as a senior, he'd finish in second-place all-time at Princeton (Michael Sowers, with 302, is first).
