
No. 18 Men’s Volleyball Outlasts Saint Francis In Home Opener, 3-2

PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 18 Princeton University men's volleyball team outlasted Saint Francis in its home opener inside Dillon Gymnasium Friday night, 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-12).
Nyherowo Omene led the match with 18 kills on a .375 hitting percentage while adding six digs and two service aces, which tied the team high. Mason Rice contributed 13 kills, hitting .455, and recorded seven digs. Henry Wedbush had a match-high 38 assists, a team-high nine digs and five kills, while Roan Alviar tied the team-high in digs with nine.
The first set began as a back-and-forth battle, with the Tigers going up three at 12-9 after a Red Flash service error followed by a Rice service ace. A kill by Wedbush gave Princeton a four-point advantage, 17-13, but a 4-0 SFU run tied it up at 17-17. The Tigers would close the set out with 4-0 run of their own, with set point coming courtesy of a kill by Omene.
Saint Francis raced out to a 10-6 lead in the second set, but Princeton battled back to tie the score at 15-15 after a kill by Omene then a double block by Ryan Vena, Wedbush and Rice. The Red Flash edged ahead, 20-18, then held on for 25-23 second set victory.
The third set was played to a stalemate at 10-10, but pair of Red Flash errors put the Tiger in front, 12-10. A 7-0 run by the Red Flash saw Saint Francis surge ahead, 20-14, then go on to prevail in the set, 25-21.
Three-consecutive kills by Omene gave Princeton an early 4-1 advantage in the fourth set. Omene, who could not be stopped, delivered two more kills that put Princeton ahead, 11-8. The momentum stayed with the Tigers, as a Rice kill ignited a 4-0 run that saw Princeton lead by five 18-13. The Tigers did not look back from there, with a Rice kill giving Princeton set point at 24-17 then another Rice kill sealing the 25-19 fourth set victory, sending the match to five.
Princeton and Saint Francis battled to a 5-5 stalemate in the fifth set, then a pair of SFU errors along with a Tristan Whitfield service ace put the Tigers up three at 8-5. The Red Flash fought back and tied it at 10-10, but the Tigers went up, 12-10, after two more Saint Francis errors put Princeton back in front, 12-10. A Vena service ace gave Princeton match point at 14-10 then an attacking error by SFU gave the Tigers the 15-12 triumph in the set along with the 3-2 win in the match.
