Men's Hockey Blanked By No. 20 UNH, 3-0
January 03, 2025 | Men's Ice Hockey
A scoreless game through two periods broke open in favor of No. 20 New Hampshire as the Wildcats scored three times in the third period to win the opener of a two-game series, 3-0.
Â
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Tigers and drops Princeton to 6-5-1 overall. The Wildcats improve to 9-4-3.
Â
The Tigers were 0-for-2 on the power play – the only man-advantages either side had in the game – including an unsuccessful five-minute powerplay overlapping the end of the second period and beginning of the third.
Â
Jared Whale made 15 saves for the shutout, while Arthur Smith stopped 16-of-18 shots faced.
Â
Late in the second period, chaos ensured after Arthur Smith was knocked over and a scrum ensued deep in the Princeton zone. When all was said and done – and after a lengthy review resulted in a major penalty being issued to UNH's Marty Lavins for grasping the facemask of David Ma – Princeton was on a five-minute major power play for the final 2:08 of the second period and the opening portion of the third.
Â
The Wildcats would kill of the entire major penalty, carrying momentum from that penalty kill into the game's first goal when Ryan Conmy found space in the center of the slot to quickly send home a Cy Leclrec pass with 13:53 remaining in the third period.
Â
UNH doubled its lead with 4:46 remaining as Robert Cronin swatted in the rebound of a Luke Reid wrister from the point that just bobbled away from Arthur Smith's grasp.
Â
A Marty Lavins empty-netter with 2:02 remaining provided extra insurance for the Wildcats.
Â
The Tigers and Wildcats finish up the series with a 4 p.m. puck drop on January 4 at Hobey Baker Rink.
