NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The #6 Princeton men's soccer team dominated Yale on the road, 4-0, on Saturday night in New Haven.
Liam Beckwith and Sam Vigilante scored their first career goals, while Daniel Ittycheria and Bardia Hormozi each added another to the tally.
Andrew Samuels and Sully Atkin combined for the shutout in goal, the Tigers' tenth of the year.
With the win, Princeton improves to 11-1-2 on the season and 5-0 in the Ivy League, remaining atop the standings.
"The guys rose to the occasion in a huge road game today and played their best half of soccer of the year in the first half. It was a great team effort today." - Head Coach Jim Barlow
How It Happened
Coming to life in the first few minutes of the game, the Tigers started to press Yale with a flurry of set pieces through the first seven, generating two corners with five shots to show for it.
Knocking on the door, Hormozi and Vigilante each sent shots in in the 16th minute, but both were blocked. Picking up the rebound, Ittycheria sent a cross in front of the goal line, where Beckwith slid in to finish and open the scoring for the Tigers.
Yale's best chance of the first half came in the 20th minute, when a shot from Aydin Jay was headed just under the crossbar, but Samuels was there to tip the ball high.
Sending play right back down the field, Beckwith again launched a shot towards the goal, but it was stopped by a Yale defender. Vigilante picked up the rebound and rocketed it into the top right of the net to double the lead.
Princeton continued to dominate, and in the 28th minute, Vigilante was fouled in the box to draw a penalty. Ittycheria stepped to the spot and buried the ball in the top left of the net past Yale keeper Conrad Lee, making the score 3-0.
With time left in the first half, the Tigers were relentless as they continued to press. In the 33rd, the ball found Hormozi just past midfield. Driving it up the field and around two Bulldogs, Hormozi finished with a low-right shot to make it 4-0 Tigers before the break.
Coming out of halftime, the Tigers continued to control the game. Roka Tsunehara had two shots blocked, while fellow winger Jack Jasinski had another go just high of the net. In the 81st minute, it looked like Kristian Kelley might add another, but the Yale keeper Marco Borrego was there to make the save.
As they continued to generate chances, the Tigers searched for a fifth goal. But, as the clock expired, the Tigers would not add another and the 4-0 score stood final.
Of Note
The Tigers will return home for another Ivy showdown with Dartmouth next Saturday as they celebrate Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. in Roberts Stadium.
