Konovalov Has Three-Point Night In Men's Hockey Loss At Union
February 15, 2025 | Men's Ice Hockey
Princeton received a career night from senior Alex Konovalov, but a back-and-forth contest fell in favor of Union, 7-4, at Messa Rink.
The Garnet Chargers scored in the first half minute and never trailed in the game. The Tigers drew even shortly after conceding the first goal, but a Garnet Chargers goal midway through the first period gave Union a lead it would not relinquish.
After Union built a two-goal lead early in the second, Princeton got back within one on three different occasions, but each time the Tigers crept back within a goal the Garnet Charges scored the next one to gain breathing room.
Alex Konovalov had his first career multi-goal game, also his first career multi-point game as he finished with two goals and an assist. Linemates Jake Manfre (two assists) and Brendan Gorman (1g, 1a) also had multi-point games.
The Garnet Chargers struck first 0:27 into the game when Riley Brueck had a shot from the point deflect off a Princeton defenseman and in.
The Tigers tied the game 2:43 later when Alex Konovalov picked off a Union breakout attempt and sniped home his second of the season with a bar-down goal
gloveside.
Ben Muthersbaugh regained a one-goal lead for the Garnet Chargers with 7:06 to play in the opening period when he picked off a clearing attempt from the Tigers and broke in free from the half-wall and beat Smith to the far post.
The Tigers appeared to have tied the game less than a minute later when a Joshua Karnish shot trickled over the line, but after a coaches challenge from the Garnet Chargers the Tigers were found to have been offside on the entry to the zone.
Early in the second period, Colby MacArthur gave the Garnet Chargers a two-goal lead with a one-timer on the power play 1:11 into the middle period.
Konovalov struck again with 8:11 left in the second period, bunting a puck out of the air and in from the doorstep after a Brendan Gorman shot was tipped up into the air. Konovalov was initially ruled to have hit it in with a high stick, but a Princeton coaches challenge shoed that he had waited until the puck had dropped under the crossbar, knocking it in on the way down for a nifty goal.
Gorman countered quickly for the Tigers as he drove the far post and pushed home a tremendous cross-ice pass from Jake Manfre just before the midway mark of the third period.
The back-and-forth affair continued as Lucas Buzziol turned around and connected for his third goal of the season assisted by Brueck just 1:02 after Gorman had scored.
The pendulum swung back towards the Tigers when Kevin Anderson uncorked a power-play goal with a wicked one-time via a Luc Pelletier assist with 7:00 to play, once again bringing the Tigers within one at 5-4.
The Tigers return to Baker Rink, hosting Brown (Feb. 21) and Yale (Feb. 22) at 7 p.m.
