No. 2 Princeton Drops Ivy Opener At No. 6 Cornell
March 15, 2025 | Men's Lacrosse
This one bore little resemblance to a typical Princeton-Cornell men's lacrosse game, with their usual late-game dramatics and one-goal finishes. If you're looking for a comparison, try Princeton-Maryland instead.
Cornell dominated possession time, turned that into a huge edge in shots and ground out one long offensive stand after another. If that sounds familiar, it's the script of your average Princeton-Maryland game.
The end result was also similar, as sixth-ranked Cornell defeated second-ranked Princeton 15-10 on Schoellkopf Field Saturday afternoon in the Ivy League opener for both.
The series between the Tigers and Big Red had seen three of the last four and five of the last seven decided by one-goal. This one seemed like it might have been headed down the same path when Princeton rallied from 7-2 down and saw the third quarter end at 11-9 Cornell.
Instead, the Big Red erupted in the final 15 minutes, scoring four times in less than five minutes to built a 15-9 edge. Princeton's Sean Cameron scored in the final minute.
Cornell outshot Princeton 51-35 for the day, including 27-18 in the second half.
Princeton did get two goals from four different players, its first two from Tucker Wade, who now has six goals in two career games against the Big Red. Wade scored the first goal of the day and then, after two Cornell goals, tied it at 2-2 with 8:02 to go in the first. Cornell won the next face-off and got an immediate CJ KIrst (5G, 2A) goal to take a lead that it would not relinquish.
Coulter Mackesy, Chad Palumbo and Colin Burns, while Nate Kabiri had a goal and two assists. Ryan Croddick made 14 saves for the Tigers.
Mackesy now has 143 career goals, three away from tying Chris Massey for second all-time at Princeton, behind only Jesse Hubbard (163).
Princeton hosts Harvard at noon this coming Saturday.
