
Riccardo Fantinelli's Run At The British Amateur Ends In The Semifinals

Rising senior Riccardo Fantinelli qualified for Match Play at the 130th British Amateur hosted at Royal St.George's and Royal Cinque Ports in England, and reached the semifinals before suffering a 4&3 loss to Ireland's Gavin Tiernan.
The 2025 Ivy League Player of the Year, Fantinelli knocked off Australia's Billy Dowling, 4&3, in the quarterfinals on June 20. Riccardo never trailed in the match, taking the lead on the second hole. He gained full control with three consecutive wins on holes 6, 7, and 8 to build a 4-up lead at the turn. Dowling got back to within two after 13 holes, but back-to-back wins for Fantinelli on 14 and 15 closed out the match.
In the semifinals, Fantinelli struck first with a win on the second hole. Tiernan answered with wins on 5 and 6 to take a 1-up lead before Fantinelli brought things back level with a win on the 9th hole. Tiernan countered quickly by winning the 10th hole and Fantinelli ran out of steam as Tiernan claimed the 12th, 14th and 15th holes to win the match.
Fantinelli won twice on Thursday, opening with a 3&2 win over Isaiah Ibit of Canada. Fantinelli trailed by one hole after a birdie from Ibit on the 11th hole, but he flipped the match quickly with wins on the 12th, 13th, and 14th holes to take a 2 up lead with four holes to play. After a halve on the 15th, Fantinelli birdied the par-3 16th hole to close out the match.
In the Round of 16, he defeated Germany's Tim Wiedemeyer, 3&1. The match was all square through 13 holes, but Fantinelli won three of the next four including a birdie on 17 to close out the match. Fantinelli had four total birdies in the match, each winning the hole.
Fantinelli opened his match play in the Round of 64 with a 3&1 win over fellow Italian Giovanni Binaghi.
Fantinelli, the 2024 and 2025 Ivy League Player of the Year, finished T6 after the 36 holes of stroke play. He opened with a 67 (-3) at Royal St. George's before following with a 69 (-3) at Royal Cinque Ports in the second round to sit at 136 (-6) overall.
Fantinelli qualified into the Amateur via his current World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) which sits at No. 313 in the world.
Fantinelli carded six birdies in his second round, including three in a row on holes 13-15 to surge up the leaderboard. He put together 11 total birdies over his 36 holes of stroke play.
He has locked up his transfer spot to match play which will begin on Wednesday with a Round of 64 and continues through the Championship Match on June 21.
