Men's Hockey Downs No. 8/9 Dartmouth, 5-4
January 02, 2026 | Men's Ice Hockey
Seventh heaven!
Princeton stormed back to beat No. 8/9 Dartmouth, 5-4, to win its seventh home game in a row to tie the program record for most consecutive wins at Hobey Baker Rink to start a season – a mark established in the first season of college hockey's oldest venue in 1923.
The victory improves the Tigers to 9-4-0 overall and 5-2-0 inside the ECAC and marks the highest-ranked team Princeton has defeated since a similar 5-4 over No. 8/8 Cornell at Lynah on January 21, 2022.
The Tigers did not lead until there was 4:53 to play, rallying from a two-goal deficit over the game's final 34:40.
The two goals give Jacobs seven points (2g, 5a) over his last four games.
Manfre now has goals in each of his last four games, scoring five times with two game-winners in the process.
Kai Daniells and Tyler Rubin each had two-assist games for the Tigers. The two helpers for Daniells give him eight points (3g, 5a) over his last three games while Rubin now has five assists over his last three games.
Arthur Smith returned to the goal for Princeton after missing the last nine games with injury and made 25 saves in goal, 11 of which came in the third period.
The Tigers were 1-for-2 against a Dartmouth penalty kill that had killed off 32-of-35 penalties entering the game. Princeton was also 3-for-3 on its own penalty kill.
Dartmouth got on the board first, as Hank Cleaves drove the net and found himself open at the far post to tap in a pass from Hayden Stavroff 4:40 into the game.
The Big Green appeared to add to their lead less than four minutes later, but a Colin Grable goal was overturned after a video replay challenge from the Princeton staff showed the puck was played with a high stick.
The Tigers carried the bulk of play after the challenge, finishing the first period with a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Another goal early in the start of a period from Dartmouth gave the Big Green a 2-0 lead when Cooper Cleaves capitalized on an open look after CJ Foley had scooped a puck out of a scrum and gave the Big Green a second look 3:27 into the second period.
Less than two minutes later, Brendan Gorman got the Tigers on the board with a power-play goal. It took the Tigers just 0:05 to connect on the man advantage, as off a Gorman faceoff win Tyler Rubin dished to Jaxson Ezman along the flank who quickly fed Gorman for a one-timer in the high slot for his seventh goal of the season.
Once again, Princeton's captain tied the game as Jacobs netted his second of the game 4:11 into the third period to level the game at 3-3. Sustained pressure in the attacking end led to passing between defense partners Jayden Sison and Tyler Rubin, with Rubin then threading a hard pass to the net front that Jacobs got a stick on and lifted over Clarke's shoulder.
Dartmouth pulled its goalie with just over 3:00 to play, and Princeton made the Big Green pay with the eventual game-winner from Manfre with 2:37 to play. Moments after a long-distance shot from Manfre sailed the entire length of the ice and hit the post, Manfre picked off a Dartmouth clearing pass and fired it into the empty net for a 5-3 lead.
That goal proved vital after a Brock Devlin prayer from the left wall hit a Princeton defender's stick and beat Smith with 0:22 to play to make it a one-goal game. The Tigers bore down off the ensuing faceoff, defending the final sequence to secure the win.
