Mellon and Werner's Career Highs Lead Princeton Past Dominican, 3-2

PRINCETON, N.J. – Led by Owen Mellon's career-high 25 kills, the Princeton men's volleyball team defeated Dominican, 3-2 (25-13, 25-20, 25-27, 22-25, 15-9) on Saturday afternoon in Dillon Gym.
Andrew Werner also hit a career-high in kills, tallying 18 while adding three aces. He hit .311, while Mellon hit a whopping .477 on the night.
With a solid defensive effort late in the match, Ethan Wells led with three block assists, while Nolan Kelly made a clutch 11 digs.
The Tigers got to work with an early 9-2 lead in set one, with Werner making two aces and a kill.
Continuing to pull away as the Tigers averaged .500 hitting, the Tigers dominated and forced four attack errors and just .077 hitting from Dominican. With a set score of 25-13, and Mellon four kills into his soon-to-be career-high, the Tigers cruised to an early 1-0 lead.
Princeton looked fierce again as it started set two, pulling away after a 4-4 tie as they managed two 3-0 runs with Mellon contributing three kills. Continuing to outpace the Chargers offensively, Princeton grew and maintained the lead. Thanks to five kills from Werner, five from Mellon, and four from Wells, the Tigers would go up 2-0 with a set score of 25-20.
In set three, Dominican came out fighting as it looked to avoid a sweep. After a close 3-6, the Chargers nabbed their first lead of the match as they worked to a six point advantage at 22-16.
With a 4-0 run courtesy of Mellon, who made four kills, Princeton brought themselves within two before tying it late at 24-24. Dropping three more points, Dominican took the third set 27-25.
The fourth set followed a similar pattern, as Dominican took the lead with a margin of four at 16012. The Tigers climbed their way back, though, tying it at 17 with a 6-1 run as Werner and Mellon made kills and Ambrose Engling tallied an ace. Despite being in it at 19-19, the Tigers would concede five more kills as the Chargers took the set 25-22.
With both sides looking to finish the job, set five was close with five ties, but Princeton kept the lead. Werner added three more kills, Engling two, and Mellon two more as Princeton used a series of runs to put the game out of reach of Dominican.

The Tigers will head out to the West coast for a matchup at #9 UC San Diego on Monday, Mar. 9, also facing #17 CSUN on Wednesday, Mar. 11 before heading back East.
