PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton men's volleyball team XXX to Charleston, XXX, on Saturday afternoon in Dillon Gym.
Owen Mellon led the Tigers with 13 kills on 20 swings for .550 hitting. With eight kills on 15 swings, Ryan Vena was behind him with .333 hitting.
Tristan Whitfield tallied a team-high five blocks in the contest, with Kelly behind him with three in addition to his 31 assists.
Vena scored the first two points for Princeton, kicking off a 4-0 run as Tigers took a 5-2 lead to force a Charleston timeout in set one. Tacking on another five to Charleston's one, Princeton added to its lead with Mellon and Werner each contributing kills.
The Tigers continued to dominate, outscoring Charleston while putting on a solid defensive performance as they held the Golden Eagles to -.080 hitting. With another 3-0 run to take the set, Princeton took the lead with a 25-11 score in game one.
Set two was an early back and forth, with Charleston taking a narrow lead before Princeton tied it back up at 6. With a 3-0 run, though, the Golden Eagles pulled away for a 9-6 lead, holding it to the media timeout at 15-12.
Down the stretch, Princeton tied it at 21 off two Golden Eagle attack errors, taking the lead with another. Taking it into extra points as both sides went one-for-one, Werner called set with a kill to hand Princeton a 2-0 lead.
Kicking off set three, the Tigers made an early 3-0 run as they took a 5-2 lead. Back-to-back kills from Werner and another from Mellon made it 12-6 Tigers as they expanded the lead to six.
Stepping up, Ethan Wells made the Tiger advantage eight as he and Mellon came up with a big block before the sophomore added a kill to make it 15-7 and force a Charleston timeout. Vena and Mellon would each tally kills of their own to continue the 7-1 run and bring the Tiger lead to 11 at 19-9.
Closing in on set point, Werner and Vena struck again before Mellon hammered it down to call the match for Princeton, 3-0.

The Tigers will close out the action in Dillon with a series against Sacred Heart next weekend, hosting the Pioneers on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.
