Men’s Volleyball Drops Road Contest at George Mason, 3-1

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Princeton University men's volleyball team dropped a road contest to George Mason inside the Recreation Athletic Complex Friday night, 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 20-25, 25-22).
Ambrose Engling recorded a match-high 16 kills on a .371 hitting percentage in addition to three digs, while Ethan Wells tallied 13 kills and hit .750 along with a match-high four blocks. Nolan Kellys's 46 assists were a match-high, as were Roan Alviar's 13 digs.
The Tigers got off to a strong start in the first set; led by an Engling kill, Princeton opened the match on a 3-0 run. The Tigers would extend their lead to 11-6 after kills by Tristan Whitfield and Engling, but the Patriots soon used a 5-0 run to tie it, 12-12. Princeton and George Mason battled and forth, with a kill by Engling giving the Tigers a 22-21 edge. The Patriots responded with a 3-0 run then went on to secure a close first set, 25-23.
George Mason opened the second set with a 4-0 run and did not look back from there. A 3-0 Patriot run gave George Mason a 10-3 lead and the Patriots would go on to earn a 25-16 second set victory.
Princeton showed fight in the third set, racing out to a 5-1 advantage. Two consecutive kills by Andrew Werner extended the Tigers' lead to 11-4, then shortly after a 3-0 run ignited by a Wells kill put Princeton up nine, 14-5. A 4-0 Patriot run made it 14-9 and George Mason would battle back to make it as close as 18-15. With the Tigers leading 22-20, a Patriot service error followed by kills from Ryan Vena and Engling gave Princeton a 25-20 triumph in the set, pushing the match to a fourth set.
Little separated the Tigers and George Mason in the early stages of the fourth set. With the Patriots holding a 10-9 lead, George Mason used a 3-0 run to take a 13-9 advantage. Princeton battled back to make it a one-point set, 20-19, after a kill by Vena followed by a block by Whitfield. George Mason was able to slightly pull away and prevail, 25-22, in the forth set and 3-1 in the match.
