Condon Named to Montreal Canadiens Roster

Canadiens press release
On Monday afternoon, Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced in a press conference that Princeton's Mike Condon '13 will be on the NHL roster, backing up Carey Price in goal.
“Mike performed really well in camp," Bergevin said. "Did we think he’d be here three weeks ago? No. But, I’m always open to young guys pushing ahead. He forced our hand, and I think it’s very positive. It was a little bit of both [Condon outperforming Tokarski and Dustin’s game falling off]. Sometimes, the players make the decisions for us.”
Condon did not allow a goal during his two preseason appearances, which including a 17-save shutout against the Toronto Maple Leafs on September 26 at the Air Canada Centre.
“It’s very exciting. I’m just happy to be here and I’m ready to get to work,” Condon said. “I’m not surprised by it. I’m confident in my abilities and I’m happy for the opportunity. It definitely hasn’t sunk in yet.”
Condon signed a two-year extension on his contract with Montreal in February, extending him through 2016-17.
SInce graduating from Princeton, Condon has steadily progressed through the ranks. Starting in Ontario (ECHL) after his senior season ended, Condon worked his way up to being a top goalie in the AHL. Last year with Hamilton, Condon posted a 23-19-6 record with a 2.44 GAA and a .921 save percentage in 48 games. He was named the third goalie for Monteal during the 2014 playoffs.
During his first interview after being named to the roster (which can be seen here), Condon said he knows not to take a single day in the NHL for granted. He looked back on his experience at Princeton, mentioning his goaltending battle with Sean Bonar '14 as what his task is now. Just on another level.
Montreal opens the NHL season with Toronto, Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
