Siiro Scores in 2-1 Loss at Union

BOX SCORE
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (2/19/16) - Junior Ryan Siiro scored a power-play goal for the Princeton men's hockey team as the Tigers lost a one-goal game at Union on Friday night, 2-1 at Messa Rink.
It was the ninth one-goal loss for the Tigers this season, who face Rensselaer tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
The teams traded power-play goals before Nick DeSimone tallied the eventual game-winning goal at 3:37 of the second period.
Princeton (5-19-2, 3-14-2 ECAC) had a chance to pull in front just over six minutes into play, but goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulos made a sprawling stick save to deny freshman Max Véronneau's one-timer from the doorstep to keep the game scoreless.
Taking three penalties in the first period was too much for the Tigers as Union (12-11-8, 5-9-5 ECAC) converted on the third power play. J.C. Brassard threw the puck towards the net from the point and Eli Lichtenwald redirected the shot past Colton Phinney for his fifth of the year at 14:44.
The Tigers netted the equalizer on the power play at 2:34 of the second, as Siiro fired home a wrist shot from the slot, his fourth goal of the season. Freshmen Alex Riche and Véronneau assisted.
Union regained its lead 1:03 later. Mike Vecchione won an offensive zone faceoff back to DeSimone, and his point shot through traffic beat Phinney on the glove side.
The Dutchmen minimized Princeton's chances in the third period, blocking six shots and holding the Tigers to just five shots on goal to hang on for the 2-1 victory.
Phinney finished the night with 34 saves, while Sakellaropoulos made 26.
Princeton was 1 for 3 on the power play and 3 for 4 on the penalty kill.
