Norman Itzkowitz is an Academic-Athletic Fellow with the men's and women's fencing programs and is a Professor Emeritus in the Near Eastern Studies department.
Itzkowitz earned his bachelor's degree from City College of New York, competing as a varsity fencer and lacrosse player while majoring in Russian and Russian history. He went on to earn master's and doctorate degrees at Princeton. Itzkowitz was the first student in the program in European and Near Eastern History, and his early research brought the process of prosopography into Ottoman studies. He has also worked in institutional history, and most recently, following his psychoanalytic training in New York at the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, he has been working on bringing the insights of psychoanalysis into the field of Turkish studies.
