Lara Mitchell joined the Princeton University women's swimming & diving team as an assistant coach in July 2027.
Mitchell joins Princeton from Ithaca College, she was a graduate assistant coach for the men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams in 2024-25 and 2025-26.
“We are thrilled to welcome Lara to the Princeton Swimming & Diving family,” said Brethauer. “From the moment we met, she brought an incredible level of energy, enthusiasm, and passion for coaching. Her background as both a competitive swimmer at Boston University and her work on deck at Ithaca College has prepared her to step into this role and make an immediate impact on the continued development of our student-athletes and our program. We are so excited to have her get started!”
From 2020-2024, Mitchell was a member of the women’s swimming and diving team at Boston University.
“I am thrilled to join the PUCSDT coaching staff alongside Abby and Joe and can't wait to learn from them in the coming season,” said Mitchell. “I'm incredibly grateful for this opportunity to coach such a talented group of swimmers here at Princeton.”
Mitchell was part of a coaching staff that guided Ithaca’s women’s swimming & diving team to Liberty League championships in 2025 and 2026, along with a Liberty League title with the men’s team in 2026.
Since August 2025, Mitchell has also served as a USA Swim Coach with the Syracuse Chargers where she develops swimmers aged eight to 18 through structured practices focused on proper technique, endurance and race strategy. In addition, Mitchell worked as a Mental Performance Consultant from May 2025 until May 2026 at Ithaca.
At BU, Mitchell earned Patriot League Academic Honor Roll honors in 2022, 2023 and 2024. She was named team MVP in 2023 and 2024 and set eight team records including three individual events and five relays while competing for the Terriers. She made it onto the podium in the 100-yard backstroke (‘22, ‘23, ‘24), 200-yard backstroke (‘22, ‘23), 200 medley relay (‘23), 200 free relay (‘23, ’24) 400 medley relay (’24) and 400-free relay (’24) at Patriot League Championships in the 2022, 2023, and 2024 seasons. Additionally, she was a member of the BU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the BU Bloom Family Leadership Academy and Morgan’s Message (student mental health support).
Mitchell graduated with a Master of Science – Sport and Exercise Science, Concentration in Mental Performance from Ithaca in May 2026. In May 2024, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts – Psychology from Boston University.
