A former assistant coach at Arizona State University and a two-time captain of the Franklin & Marshall swim team, Phil Spiniello will enter his fifth year as the assistant coach for the Princeton women’s swimming and diving team during the 2010-11 season. He helped lead Princeton to both the 2007 and 2008 Ivy League championships during his first two seasons with the Tigers, and he helped guide Princeton to an Ivy title in 2010. Princeton ended the 2010 season ranked atop the CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA Mid-Major Rankings and finished 18th in both the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Championship meet. He also serves as the head coach of Tiger Aquatic Club.
Spiniello, along with veteran head coach Susan Teeter, has helped guide Princeton on its current 30-meet win streak; that run includes 28 straight Ivy wins and dates back to a loss against the nationally ranked Michigan Wolverines. During his time, Princeton has posted a number of impressive performances in championship meets, including its three Ivy League titles and several strong showings at the NCAA Championships, including 13 All-America honors for former standout Alicia Aemisegger '10.
Spiniello also serves as the recruiting coordinator at Princeton and helped bring in the 14th-ranked recruiting class in the nation in 2008, according to collegeswimming.com. In his four years, Princeton has finished in the Top 25 each year at NCAAs and has earned All-America honors in numerous individual events, as well as the 2008 800 free relay.
As an assistant coach at Arizona State, his responsibilities included on-deck coaching of all athletes, recruiting, managing/coordinating team travel, budget, entries and compliance issues. He also served as the assistant director of the swim school’s fall and spring sessions.
Spiniello made his way to Tempe, Ariz., the previous year to begin work on his master’s degree, which he earned in May 2006. He also served as the co-head coach of both the Sun Devil Aquatics (USA Swimming Gold Medal Club) and the Sparky Swim Camp. His responsibilities included designing and implementing training plans and teaching technique in all four strokes.
