- Email:
Alan Clyne, a 10-time winner of Scotland's national squash championship, joined the Princeton men's squash staff as an assistant coach in August 2022.
"I cannot be more pleased that Alan is joining the team," Princeton head men's squash coach Sean Wilkinson said upon Clyne's hiring. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with him that will be hugely beneficial to us all as a team. Alan is a distinguished international player for Scotland, winning a gold medal at the 2016 World Doubles Championships in Australia. We want to surround ourselves with the best, and Alan has proven over and over again to be among the best players in the world. I can't wait for him to get to campus in a few weeks, and am just thrilled that he will be helping a new generation of Tigers reach their potential."
Along with winning 10 Scottish national titles, Clyne was Scotland's top player for 12 years while playing in 171 matches for the national team entering into his tenure at Princeton. Ranked in the world's top 50 at No. 48 at the time of his hiring at Princeton, Clyne has been ranked as high as No. 24 in the world during his 15-year pro career, which has seen him win eight Professional Squash Association World Tour titles while making the semifinals in three Commonwealth Games and winning a British and Scottish Universities title.Â
"I am so excited by the opportunity to be a part of the team at Princeton," Clyne said upon his hiring. "I have been closely following college squash for a long time and to be able to start my coaching career at such a prestigious university with a rich squash history is an honor. I can't wait to meet the team and get started."
Clyne began coaching in 2004 with the Scottish Squash Academy, working with Scotland's top players in the National Development Program, while also working with Legassick Squash in Rhode Island from 2012-19, helping with the instruction at Brown University's squash camps. During the 2021-22 season, Clyne worked with Episcopal Academy (Pa.), coaching at summer camps and giving individual lessons.Â
Clyne is an alumnus of Fortrose Academy and of the University of Edinburgh, where he majored in physical education. Clyne holds a Level 2 United Kingdom Coaching Certificate.
Since 2018, Clyne has been married to fellow squash pro Olivia (née Blatchford) Clyne, who competed professionally until her retirement in 2024 and reached a career-high ranking of No. 11 in the world in October 2021.
