PRINCETON, N.J. - The visiting Bulldogs scored with only 27 seconds left in regulation, and Princeton had two goals denied in the second overtime period due to offsides, leaving the Tigers in a 2-2 tie with Yale in women's soccer action tonight at Lourie-Love Field.
The Tigers seemed to be a little flat to open the game, and the Bulldogs took advantage quickly. Yale got on the board when Theryn Gibbons connected on a quick pass from Ali Cobbett only 7:47 into the first half. That goal sparked the Tigers, and they knotted the score at 1-1 less than two minutes later when Alex Fiore (Fr., Garden City, N.Y.) scored her third goal of the season at the 9:35 mark. Fiore's shot seemed to be wrapped up by Bulldog keeper Sarah Peterson, but somehow the ball slipped through her arms and to the back of the net.
Princeton took the lead with less than five minutes remaining in the opening stanza on Jenny Skinner's (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) first collegiate goal. Off a Princeton corner, the kick was deflected by a Yale defender and came right to the feet of Skinner. The freshman fired a bullet past Peterson to give the Tigers a one-goal lead at intermission. That score would stand until the closing moments of the second half. The Elis, attempting a late rally, packed the team in front of the Princeton goal in hopes of giving Yale a chance to keep the game alive. Those hopes were answered when Megan Strenski made a quick pass across the goal face to Gibbons. For her second goal of the game, Gibbons collected the ball and squeaked a shot between Tiger keeper Jordan Rettig (Jr., West Hartford, Conn.) and the left post, forcing overtime.
In the first overitme Princeton 's Julie Shaner (Jr., Gwyneedd Valley, Pa.) hit a blast from about 30 yards out, but the ball ricocheted off the crossbar and back into play. Peterson kept Yale in the game when the sophomore goalkeeper went horizontal to make a great save on a shot by Josie Francica (Fr., Paramus, N.J.) with less than a minute expired in the second overtime. Yale best scoring chance went right over the goal as a direct kick in the 102nd minute floated just above the crossbar. Premature victory celebration erupted when Dana DeCore (Sr., Pennington, N.J.) collected a rebound off Krista' Ariss' (Fr., Burlington, Ont.) shot and found the back of the net with 5:45 remaining. The goal was disallowed due to an offsides call. It seemed like instant replay three minutes later when DeCore scored again, only to be called back once again for offsides.
The Tigers are now 4-2-1 on the year, 2-0-1 in league competition. Princeton will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 5, as it hosts Monmouth in Princeton Staduim. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
