PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton men's soccer team fired 15 shots and forced Columbia goalie Matt Hill to make 10 saves, but the Lions were the ones that escaped with the 1-0 victory. Princeton (4-3, 2-1 Ivy) suffers its first loss in league play and must regroup to take on Brown in Providence this weekend.
For almost 89 minutes, the Tigers dominated the Lions, but a goal at the 79:30 mark of the second half by Alajandro Suarez gave Columbia all it needed for the win. Suarez knocked home a rebound from inside the goal box that barely got by Princeton goalie Jason White (Fr., Maple Glen, Pa.) and defender Greame Rein (So., Birmingham, Ala.). With Columbia (7-2, 2-2 Ivy) only taking four shots in the contest, White made three saves and suffers the third loss of his young career.
Griff Behncke (Sr., Williamsburg, Va.) who had four shots and two legitimate scoring chances led the Tiger attack. Mike Nugent (So., West Windsor, N.J.) had three shots as well. Junior Matt Striebel (Gill, Mass.) had two shots and perhaps the best Princeton scoring chance, which came in the final two minutes of play.
The Tigers continue League play against the defending league champion Brown Bears on Saturday evening.
