PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton men's soccer team opened its Ivy League season this afternoon with a 3-1 win over Cornell (1-3, 0-1 Ivy) at Lourie-Love Field. The Tigers (1-1, 1-0 Ivy) got goals from Matt Behncke (So., Williamsburg, Va.), his brother Griff Behncke (Sr., Williamsburg, Va.) and Mike Nugent (So., West Windsor, N.J.). Matt Behncke also added an assist on Nugent's goal.
After letting up an early goal to the Big Red's Adam Skumawitz, the Princeton attack began. The Tigers were led by steady play all around from Matt Striebel (Jr. Gill, Mass.) who set up the first goal by Matt Behncke at the 23:41 mark of the first half. Behncke let fly on a shot from about 15 yards and found the back of the net.
Brein Wassner (Sr., Roslyn, N.Y.) and Lucas Moskowitz (So., Storrs, Conn.) set up Griff Behncke on his tally. Behncke headed in a lead pass from Wassner to give the Tigers the lead for good.
Nugent added the insurance for the Tigers in the 58th minute. He was set up by Matt Behncke and blasted a shot from about eight yards out for the goal. Princeton got steady goaltending once again from freshman keeper Jason White (Maple Glen, Pa.) who made three saves on six Big Red shots.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 against cross-county rival Rider at Lourie-Love Field.
