PRINCETON, N.J. - With a flair for the dramatic, the Princeton women's tennis team defeated Virginia by a score of 5-4 for the ECAC championship at the Lenz Tennis Center.
Princeton won four of the six singles matches to jump out to the early lead, but Virginia came back to make it close in the doubles competition.
Kavitha Krishnamurthy (Fr., Oakville, Ontario) won in straight sets over Amy O'Donnell 7-5, 6-4 to lead things off, and then Jyotsna Vasisht (Sr., New York, N.Y.) defeated Christine Schweer in three sets for the early lead. It looked as though it would be a Princeton runaway after Amanda Hastings-Phillips (Sr., Laguna Beach, Calif.) disposed of Henriette Williams in straight sets. But Virginia won the fourth and fifth singles matches to make it close. Leslie Cook and Jen Tuchband earned points for the Cavaliers. Kristi Watson (So., Shawnee Mission, Kan.) came from a set down to defeat Kelly Weaver for the final singles point.
All Princeton needed was a win in one of the doubles matches to claim the title. However, Virginia took the first two doubles matches that were played and set up a showdown of each team's top team. Hastings-Phillips and Gailor Large (Jr., Baltmore, Md.) defeated Schweer and Cook 8-5 for the title.
