PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five matches this evening with a 3-0 shutout over Villanova. Brein Wassner (Sr., Roslyn, N.Y.) scored the game winner for the Tigers on a beautiful breakaway. With the win, Princeton runs its record to 8-3-1 and Villanova falls to 2-12.
Wassner scored his first of the season with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half from a perfect clearing pass from Matt Douglas (Fr., Rancho Sante Fe, Calif.). Wassner barely stayed onside and took the ball as Villanova keeper Sean Teesdale came out to challenge with a sliding tackle. Wassner hurdled the attempt and calmly knocked in the goal.
Following the halftime break, Princeton came out aggressive and forced Villanova to play in its own end. The offensive mentality paid off in the 75th minute when Lucas Moskowitz (So., Storrs, Conn.) scored his second of the season off a Kevin Griffin (Jr., Jenkintown, Pa.) rebound. Mike Nugent (So., West Windsor, N.J.) knocked home his sixth goal of the season in the 80th minute off of a Matt Behncke (So., Williamsburg, Va.) free kick.
The shutout was Jason White's (Fr., Maple Glen, Pa.) sixth of the season and puts him third on the all-time list of shutouts in a season. White made four saves on nine shots.
Both teams combined for 24 fouls and two yellow cards. Princeton had a 10-4 edge in corner kicks and an 18-9 shot advantage.
Princeton returns to Ivy League play this weekend against Harvard in Boston on Saturday.
