Harvard Nips Princeton 1-0 in Overtime in Women's Soccer

CAMBRIDGE, MASS - The Princeton women's soccer team battled the No. 17 Harvard into overtime, but the Crimson came up with a big goal in the 99th minute of play to defeat the Tigers this afternoon, 1-0 on Ohiri Field in Cambridge. With the victory, the Crimson is now in the driver's seat for its fourth Ivy title in five years, as each team in the League with the exception of Harvard has at least one loss. In addition, the Crimson is unbeaten in its last ten contests, while the loss snaps Princeton's ten-game unbeaten streak.
Junior midfielder Meredith Stewart (Holliston, MA) was the hero this afternoon for the Crimson. In the 99th minute, senior Ashley Berman (Portland, OR) had the ball deep in the right corner, and fed it to sophomore Colleen Moore (Newton, MA) at the touchline. Moore sent a cross into the box, and after it ricocheted off the leg of a Princeton defender, Stewart gathered control of the ball and fired it into the lower left of the net past Princeton keeper Catherine Glenn (So., Jacksonville, FL) for the "Golden Goal" victory. Glenn recorded seven saves in 72 minutes of work after coming in for the injured Jordan Rettig (Jr., West Hartford, CT) at the 27-minute mark. Harvard goalie Cheryl Gunther (Hauppauge, NY) made six saves in her second consecutive shutout effort.
For the second consecutive year, the Harvard-Princeton game ended with a 1-0 Harvard victory. The Crimson is 20-4-0 all time against the Tigers, including wins in the last seven. Princeton last scored a victory in the 1992 season, 2-0.
The Tigers are now 10-3-1 on the year, 3-1-1 in league play. Princeton will return to action this Friday as it hosts Ivy opponent Columbia. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Lourie-Love Field.
