PRINCETON, N.J. - On senior day at Lourie-Love Field in front of 3,000 rowdy fans, the Princeton men's soccer team clinched its first outright Ivy League championship since 1960 with a scoreless tie against the Yale Bulldogs. The Tigers (11-4-2, 5-1-1 Ivy) were co-champions with Columbia in 1993 when Princeton advanced to the Final Four.
The Tigers and the Bulldogs (12-4-1, 4-2-1 Ivy) played each other as even as possible this afternoon. As evening approached, the two teams played back and forth. Princeton had two legitimate scoring chances in the first half.
Lucas Moskowitz (So., Storrs, Conn.) and Mike Nugent (So., West Windsor, N.J.) had back to back chances on the Yale doorstep, but Bulldog goalie Danny Moss turned them away.
Yale had perhaps the best scoring chance of either team with a minute remaining in regulation. A corner kick was sent into the box from the right side and Tiger keeper Jason White (Fr., Maple Glen, Pa.) batted it away. The rebound was sent back towards the goal, but Princeton's Bob Nye (Fr., Downingtown, Pa.) was there for the clear from the goal-mouth.
The Bulldogs had three consecutive corner kicks in the overtime period, but White was there for the saves. With three saves, White earned his eighth shutout of the year and is now tied for the all-time mark for shutouts in a season.
The Tigers now await the announcement of the NCAA tournament bracket, which will be held on Monday night at 9 p.m. The Bulldogs, with wins over defending national champion Indiana, St. John's and Georgetown await an at-large bid, also to be announced on Monday.
