EVANSTON, ILL. - Despite a career-high 19 points and seven assists by Brooke Lockwood (Sr., Palatine, Ill.) and shooting 53% from the floor as a team, the Princeton women's basketball team fell to New Hampshire 74-61 in the consolation game of the Roger L. White Invitational at Northwestern this evening in Evanston.
The crowd at Ryan-Welsh Arena witnessed the Lockwood vs. Danen Show, as Princeton's Lockwood and New Hampshire's Aubrey Danen put on a low-post clinic in the first half. Danen scored 16 of the Wildcats 32 points, including the last five New Hampshire field goals of the opening period. Lockwood surpassed her previous scoring high of 12 points with 13 in the first 20 minutes of play.
Neither team led by more than six through the midway point of the first half, but a 15-6 Wildcat run gave new Hampshire a 28-17 lead with 5:05 on the clock. A 15-2 Tiger run, sparked by three baskets from Lockwood, put Princeton ahead 32-30 with 1:15 remaining. The Orange and Black were unable to score in the final minute and trailed 34-32 at the break. The Tigers shot 65% from the floor and recorded 12 assists on 13 field goals before halftime. Freshman Maureen Lane (Seattle, Wash.) chipped in six points.
New Hampshire's Sarah Bushey had two points, two assists and a steal in the first three minutes after intermission that seemed to fuel a 8-4 Wildcat run early in the second half. At the 8:45 mark, Danen hit one of two from the line to give New Hampshire a double-figure lead it would never relinquish. The Wildcats held their biggest lead of the game at 15 points on three occassions in the second half, and the Tigers drew to within 10 at 67-57 with under a minute to play, but a 7-2 run Wildcat run put the game out of reach for the Orange and Black. Allison Cahill (Fr., Uxbridge, Mass.) scored five of her career-high nine points in the final two minutes, including two free-throws with 11 seconds to play.
Brooke Lockwood did not disappoint the home crowd, leading the Tigers with 19 points and seven assists. Lane added eight in the losing effort. Danen lead all scorers with 22 points, surpassing her previous career-high of 15, and six rebounds.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 11, as they host Siena in a non-league contest. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on RCN cable.
