Weekend One-Timers
Unwelcome guests? — The last time Princeton traveled to Minnesota, the Tigers claimed the 1998 Mariucci Classic title. The Tigers defeated the University of Minnesota 4-1 in the semifinal and shut out Boston University 3-0 in the championship at Mariucci Arena. Out of conference, out of luck — Both teams will be looking for their first victory outside of their respective leagues this weekend. Bemidji State is 0-4 outside the CHA, while Princeton is 0-2 (a 7-2 loss vs. Niagara and a 3-0 loss at Northeastern) outside the ECAC.
It hasn't always been like this – Princeton is 10-1-1 since the 1996-97 season in back-to-back non-conference games.
Comparatively speaking – Princeton and Bemidji State have a common opponent in 1999, Niagara. The Tigers fell 7-2 to Niagara in their season opener, the Beavers are 0-3-1 against Niagara this season.
1-2 punch — Princeton swept the top two teams in the ECAC last weekend at Baker Rink. The Tigers defeated No. 2 Cornell 5-2 on Friday and took out No. 1 Colgate 5-1 on Saturday.
I'm honored … again — Sophomore Dave Stathos was named ECAC Goaltender of the Week after making 32 saves in the win over Cornell and 29 saves in the win over Colgate. Stathos, who never received this honor during his freshman season, has been the recipient twice in the last three weeks.
More for Morin — Senior forward Benoit Morin entered last weekend with three assists this season. He recorded five in the two games, including a career-high four in the 5-1 win over Colgate. His efforts earned him a spot on the ECAC Honor Roll.
Rallying cry — In each of its three ties this season, Princeton has needed to rally from third-period deficits, including two times when the game-tying goal was scored in the final 1:30 of regulation. In Princeton's first win (at Yale, Nov. 23), the Tigers rallied from a second-period deficit.
Almost equal rights — Princeton has scored 14 goals on the power play and allowed 13 goals on its opponents' power plays. It has scored one shorthanded goal and allowed one.
Parsons power – Sophomore Brad Parsons has five goals, four of which have come on the power play. He and Chris Corrinet are tied for the team lead with four power-play goals apiece. Parsons has two multiple-goal games, including one against Colgate.
A power-ful opening – Princeton has scored on its first power-play opportunity in seven of its first ten games. In the three power plays that Princeton didn't score on, it gave up one goal when Northeastern scored the first shorthanded goal of the season against Princeton.
Can't wait for his 64th game — In his first 31 games, Josh Roberts scored one goal. In the third period of his 32nd game against Cornell, he scored twice, including the first game-winning goal of his career.
Twice as nice – Princeton won two games in a row last weekend for the first time since it closed out its regular season in 1999 with a trio of wins.
Stat-hos – In his last four starts, Dave Stathos is 3-1 with a .950 save percentage and a 1.75 goals-against average. He allowed more than two goals only once and twice limited teams to one goal.
Stat-hos, Part 2 – Stathos has played periods when he singlehandedly kept Princeton in the game. In his last four starts he has had periods of 19 saves, 15 saves (twice), 14 saves and 13 saves.
Home away from home — Benoit Morin has 40 penalty minutes this season. The next closest Tiger, Dave Bennett, has 16.
Box-ing the opponents — In the last six games, Morin has five penalties for 10 minutes and has drawn six penalties for 15 minutes.
Oh captain, my captain – Darren Yopyk is Princeton's first solo captain since Sean O'Brien led the 1993-94 squad. Yopyk scored two goals in his first three seasons, he has three this year, including two last weekend.
