ITHACA, N.Y. - Freshman midfielder Kelly Sosa broke a scoreless tie with 8:01 left in the first half and three other players added second half insurance goals to lead the Princeton women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over Cornell in the Ivy League opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Berman Field.
The win improves Princeton's record to 3-0 on the season, including 1-0 in the Ivy League, while Cornell falls to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Sosa's game-winner came on a scramble in front of the Cornell goal. After a loose ball bounced off the legs of several players, Sosa beat her defender and connected on a half-volley from 12 yards out for the first goal of her collegiate career.
Sophomore midfielder Jennifer Lankford extended Princeton's lead to 2-0 when she stole a Cornell clearing attempt and blasted in a shot from the top of the penalty area with 8:16 elapsed in the second half. Junior back Susan Rea iced the game for the Tigers with just under 20 minutes remaining when her shot from 35 yards out looped over the head of Big Red goalkeeper Meghan Cauzillo (Northville, Mich.) and under the crossbar.
Junior forward Dana DeCore rounded out the scoring for Princeton, which outshot Cornell 25-6, when she gathered in a perfect through ball from sophomore midfielder Julie Shaner and beat Cauzillo (seven saves) cleanly from 18 yards out on a breakaway with 9:39 remaining.
For the third straight game, sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Rettig and senior goalkeeper Jonna Iacono combined on a shutout for Princeton. Rettig started the contest and made two first half saves, while Iacono played the second half and added one save. The Big Red's best scoring chance came in the second half when sophomore midfielder Sophia Smith (Houston, Texas) hit the post from 12 yards out.
Cornell is next in action on Tuesday, Sept. 22 when it travels to face nationally-ranked Penn State for a 7 p.m. contest. The Big Red will resume its Ivy League schedule with an 11 a.m. home game against Pennsylvania on Saturday, Sept. 26. GAME SUMMARY
