PRINCETON, N.J. - Strong performances by Wendy Herm (Sr., Westtown, N.Y.) and Devon Keefe (So., Winter Park, Fla.) led the Princeton University softball team to a strong start in the Princeton Invitational, which started today at Class of 1895 Field. Princeton defeated Hofstra 9-3 but fell to UMass 4-0. The Minutewomen lead the tournament with a 2-0 record while both Princeton and Hofstra are 1-1. Connecticut is 0-2.
Princeton built on the momentum from Thursday?s sweep of Rutgers by scoring nine runs on 13 hits against Hofstra. Herm went 4-for-4 in the game with three runs and two RBIs. Devon Keefe had three hits and two runs while Katie Bay (Sr., Northport, N.Y.) had three RBIs, including a crucial two-RBI single in the fourth inning. Pitcher Brianne Galicinao (Fr., Stockton, Cal.) gave up three runs while scoring two herself for the win.
Game two was a different story for the Tigers. Although they avoided Massachusetts? All America pitcher Danielle Henderson, who struck out 16 Huskies in a 2-0 victory to open the day, they could not solve Carrie Jeffries. Jeffries pitched a complete game, striking out three while allowing only four hits. Herm had two hits, while Keefe and pinch-hitter Carrie Breslin (So., Macungie, Pa.) had one apiece. Princeton pitcher Sarah Peterman (Jr., Davis, Cal.) allowed six hits and one earned run for her fourth loss of the season.
UMass and Hofstra will play at 9:30 tomorrow morning, followed by Princeton and Connecticut at 11:30. Connecticut will then play either Hofstra or Princeton at 1:30 while the other will meet UMass in the final game of the Invitational.
Game scores:
UMass 2, UConn 0
Princeton 9, Hofstra 3
UMass 4, Princeton 0
