Stanford Defeats Softball Team in NCAA Regional Opener

Maddie Ratcheson hit a home run in her first NCAA tournament at-bat after Julieta Roa gave Princeton the lead with an RBI hit in the second inning, but a four-run second inning gave Stanford a lead the Cardinal did not give back in winning Friday's NCAA regional opener in Stillwater, Okla., 8-2.
In the top of the second inning, Jessica Phelps reached on a two-out error before pinch runner Sarah Lessig stole second, putting a runner in scoring position for Roa, who dropped a base hit into left field to give Princeton the lead.
Stanford used four doubles, a sacrifice fly and a successful double steal to push four runs across in the bottom of the second to go ahead 4-1 before Ratcheson's solo homer in the top of the third cut the Cardinal lead to two.Â
A single, a sac bunt and a double got that run back for Stanford in the fourth, and the Cardinal opened it up with three runs in the sixth on two singles and two doubles to push the lead to 8-2.
In the double-elimination format, Princeton will take on Eastern Illinois on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
