NEW YORK, N.Y.— Greg Parker (Fr., Clifton Park, Pa.) put up a strong performance at the third annual Ivy League classic yesterday, held at Columbia University. Parker placed second in the 165-pound weight bracket and lost to Penn's Brett Matter, who was voted the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
"He did an outstanding job and showed that he is ready to compete at this level," coach Michael New said. "He has a few things to learn and improve but his intensiuty was great and his desire was outstanding."
Parker defeated Harvard's Robbie Griffin 8-0 in the first round before surviving a tough 8-7 decision against Trey Burlingame of Cornell, one of the bracket's top seeds. Parker then defeated Jim Stanec of Cornell 5-2 before being tech-falled in 6:45 to Matter. Parker wrestled Matter pretty evenly at the beginning of the match, but Matter's experience won out in the final two periods.
Parker was one of two Tigers to place in the top six at the tournament. Jeffrey Bernd (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) placed sixth at the 157-pound bracket. He lost to Joe Nastasi of Penn 7-1 in the final match.
"Team needs to develop better self-expectations," New said. "They technically look outystanding, but they need to apply those skills with a vengeance, not just an indifferent attitude."
Princeton next wrestles at the East Stroudsburg Open next weekend.
