ATHENS, Ga. - Princeton freshman Kavitha Krishnamurthy won the singles title at the eighth annual Georgia Invitational Monday. She now has a record of 25-1 and owns a winning streak of 24 after starting the season with a 1-1 record at William and Mary.
Krishnamurthy, the second seed who is ranked 21st nationally, defeated Boston College junior Cynthia Tow 6-4,6-1 in the 75-minute final. It marked the second time this season that she has beaten Tow, the eighth seed here, in a tournament final. Back in September, she beat then top-seeded Tow 6-4,7-6 at the Cissie Leary Invitational in Philadelphia, Penn. She was the second seed in this event too.
"I felt good about the way I played here the last few days, facing some good players from a lot of different schools," said Krishnamurthy. "In the first set I got off to a good start, and I think Cynthia picked it up after I got up 4-0. In the second set, I started playing better after an early break at 2-1, and I was able to close it out after that."
Amanda Hastings-Phillips also competed at the event and received a first-round bye. She advanced to the third round with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Mable Abraham of Armstrong Atlantic State before falling to six seeded Kelly Baskin of Georgia.
