Despite Improvements, Princeton Wrestlers Get Swept

PRINCETON, N.J. - When Princeton University wrestling coach Mike New speaks about the noticeable improvements that his squad has made, he needs only to point to last night's tight 19-15 loss to Columbia University.
And when he talks about the long road that his team still needs to travel if it hopes to get into the race for Ivy League supremacy, he needs only to point to today's pair of routs at the hands of Cornell and Navy. The Big Red defeated Princeton 34-9 while Navy handed the Tigers a 31-6 defeat.
The loss to Columbia could certainly have gone either way. Both teams traded minor decisions, including Princeton wins by Joe Clarke (Fr., Atlanta, Ga.) and Scott Pasquini (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.), as Princeton held a 15-9 lead going into the final two matches. Brian Foran (Jr., Katona, N.Y.) lost an 18-6 decision to Matt Greenberg at 197 while Justin Dodulik (Sr., Palmyra, N.J.), typically a 194-pound wrestler who was forced to move to heavyweight after an injury to Joe Rybacki, was pinned by David Boyuk.
Today's matches were less dramatic, but still featured some solid inividual performances by Princeton wrestlers. Albert Pendleton (Jr., Atlanta, Ga.) defeated Cornell's George Bell 7-1 while Jeff Bernd (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) and Clarke won individual matches against Navy. Clarke won two of three matches this weekend, losing only to Cornell captain Ben New, the younger brother of Tigers' coach Michael New.
