CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Brad Parson's breakaway goal with nearly four minutes remaining in the third period led the Princeton men's hockey team to a 4-2 victory against Harvard at the Bright Hockey Center.
After losing at Brown, then the last-place team in the ECAC, the night before, the Tigers rebounded for a victory against the ECAC-leading Crimson.
Princeton headed into the third period against Harvard with a 2-1 lead, but the Crimson's Trevor Allman scored his third goal of the season at 6:25 to tie the game. Parsons then took a pass from Chris Corrinet and skated in all alone and beat Harvard goalie J.R. Prestifilippo at 15:54. The sophomore center from Kingston, Mass., recorded his sixth goal of the season and second game-winning goal. Linemate Kirk Lamb also added an assist.
Ethan Doyle, a native of Marblehead, Mass., added an empty-net, power-play tally at 18:58 with an assist from Brad Meredith to seal the victory. It was Doyle's fourth of the year and second in the past two games. Sophomore goalie Dave Stathos stopped 16 Harvard third-period shots on his way to a 35-save performance. After a scoreless first period Meredith converted a pass from freshman George Parros at 2:14 of the second to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. It was Meredith's second goal of the season, and the second assist went to Shane Campbell.
Less than three minutes later Harvard's Scott Turco scored his fourth of the year to tie the game at 1-1, but Princeton answered before the period ended. Lamb scored a breakaway, power-play goal at 17:04 as Princeton held a 2-1 lead after two periods. Corrinet, a native of Greenfield, Mass., picked-up the only assist on Lamb's third on the season and second power-play goal of the year.
Princeton surrendered that lead, put Parson's goal and Stathos' goaltending led Princeton to a split of the weekend series at Brown and Harvard.
Princeton received two goals and two assists from players that grew up in Massachusetts: Corrinet (Greenfield – two assists), Doyle (Marblehead – one goal) and Parsons (Kingston – one goal).
Princeton improved its ECAC record to 4-3-3 and its overall mark to 6-7-3 overall. Harvard is 6-4-3 in the conference and 7-8-1 overall. The victory at Harvard and accompanying two points in the ECAC standings moved Princeton from a fourth-place tie to sole possession of third place. Despite the loss, Harvard remains in first place with 13 points. Yale is second with 12 points, followed by Princeton's 11. Harvard has played one more ECAC game than Princeton and Yale, however.
Due to the University's exam break, the Tigers will be out of action until Sunday, Jan. 23 when they host Lowell at 5 p.m.
