PRINCETON, N.J. - For senior Julie Shaner it was a night of firsts. She scored her first Ivy League goal of the season and was the first to get a ball past Brown goalie Mary Jo Markle.
Before Shaner scored in the 24th minute of the first half off an assist by Tanya Kalivas, Markle had not given up a goal all season. Coming into the game against Princeton on Friday, Markle had the best goals-against average (0.00) in the nation. In fact, in the Tigers 1-0 win at Lourie-Love Field, Shaner's goal was only the second the Bears had given up all year.
"I'm just glad we came out on top," said Shaner. "I'm really happy because I hadn't scored a goal in an Ivy League game. It was a really big goal for us. We weren't intimidated by Brown and we just tried to put a lot of pressure on them."
Princeton (9-2, 4-0 Ivy) remains undefeated in league play. Brown (9-1) suffered its first loss of the season and dropped to 2-1 in the league. Senior goalkeeper Jordan Rettig posted her fourth Ivy League shutout, her sixth overall, and Princeton's ninth. "I thought we played really well and battled really hard," said head coach Julie Shackford. "Brown came in with a lot of confidence and we just took it to them. I thought we lost some momentum in the end but played really smart the last 20 minutes of the game."
