Princeton Ties Loyola 1-1

Baltimore, Md. - The trip down to Baltimore was quite an adventure for the Tigers as they waited in the parking lot of Jadwin Gymnasium for an hour-and-a-half as members of the Loyola College athletic department debated whether recent rainstorms in the Baltimore area would cause the game to be cancelled. Thankfully, the game was on and a beautiful sunny sky awaited the Tigers. After stepping off the bus the Tigers observed their next obstacle, which was a soccer field in such poor condition that there were more piles of drying compound and divots than there was grass.
In addition to a travel delay and a poor playing surface, the referee was extremely inconsistent in his management of the game. Having listed these three negative external factors that Princeton faced on Wednesday, they did play a very spirited game.
Unfortunately, Princeton was caught out of position in the 16th minute of the first half when Loyola's Miguel Abreu countered the Tigers aggressive offensive positioning by pushing the ball quickly up the right sideline. Abreu beat Marty Shaw, who was the only defender back, and beat Jason White on a breakaway goal. The Tigers bench would help them get back into the game as reserve, Andre Forrester, drilled the ball into the upper right hand corner of the Loyola goal from the 18-yard line. This was Forrester's first goal of the season and Matt Striebel was credited with the assist. Princeton carried the play in a scoreless second half and had a goal disallowed because of a questionable offside call by the linesman. While this overturn was disheartening the Tigers continued to scratch and claw their way through the rest of regulation. In addition to Forrester's solid all-around play off the bench, Dan Osei, Garrett Bartolotta, and Matt Douglas provided fresh legs and an offensive spark.
Jason White made two incredible saves during the two overtime periods, both of them occurring at point-blank range. Unfortunately, the game would end in a tie as darkness enshrouded the field for most of the second overtime period. In fact, most of the players had trouble seeing the ball, because Alumnae Field did not have lights. All in all, Jim Barlow's Tigers played very hard and did not let any external factors dampen their enthusiasm. Princeton faces Harvard at Lourie-Love Field on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
