Princeton, N.J. - Princeton and Clarkson met in Baker Rink on Friday night to begin this season's ECAC conference play. The Golden Knights were a stellar 3-0-1 against the Tigers last season as they knocked Princeton out of the first round of the ECAC tournament in two games.
Clarkson's Jean Desrochers opened the scoring at 4:42 of the first period as the puck trickled in the net by Princeton goalie Dave Stathos (Jr., Longueuil, Quebec). Trevor Edwards and Gasper Sekelj recorded the assists on Desrocher's goal.
Princeton was unfazed by this inauspicious beginning as it jumped on the scoreboard halfway through the first period when Shane Campbell (Sr., Red Deer, Alberta) scored Princeton's first power-play goal of the season. Campbell's goal was setup by a couple of nifty passes from Parros (So., Randolph, N.J.) and David Del Monte (Jr., Mississauga, Ontario).
Two minutes later Parros scored from the slot as Ethan Doyle (Sr., Marblehead, Mass.) and Neil McCann (Calgary, Alberta) found him all alone in front of Clarkson's goalie Shawn Grant.
There was no scoring in the second period, however, there was a good flow to the game.
The Golden Knights struck for two goals in the early stages of the third period. Kevin O'Flaherty and Dave Reid both scored both goals exactly two seconds after the Tigers had killed off two penalties.
Parros scored Princeton's second power-play goal of the evening in the 12th minute as senior standouts Kirk Lamb (Sr., Cold Lake, Alberta) and Campbell found him wide open in front of Grant. The Tigers' power play scoring binge continued as Brad Parsons (Jr., Kingston, Mass.) untied the score with Princeton's third power-play goal of the night. Seniors Chris Corrinet (Greenfield, Mass.) and Lamb recorded the assists on Parsons' goal.
Clarkson pulled its goalie with 1:36 to go in regulation and took advantage of an extra attacker by scoring the game-tying goal at 18:47 of the third period. Kent Huskins fired the puck from the point at Stathos, who made the initial save, and Rob McFeeters skated in towards the net unmolested to knock in the rebound.
Stathos recorded 39 saves and Clarkson's Grant made 31 stops in the 4-4 tie. The game ended in a 4-4 tie as the play was frenetic and rather physical in the five-minute overtime period.
The tie pushes Princeton's overall record to 1-0-2 and its conference record to 0-0-1. The Tigers face last season's ECAC tournament champions, the St. Lawrence Saints, at 7:00 p.m. in Baker Rink tomorrow night.
