PRINCETON, N.J. - Despite registering just 13 shots on goal, the Princeton men's hockey team escaped with a 1-1 tie against Niagara tonight at Baker Rink.
A pair of freshmen teamed up to provide Princeton's only goal. Dan Hursh (Calgary, Alberta) scored his first collegiate goal when he collected a Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer (Manlius, N.Y.) pass off the boards and skated in alone of Niagara goalie Rob Bonk. Coming off the left wing boards, Hursh cut across the crease a slipped a backhander between Bonk's pads at 5:57 of the third period.
"I got a good bounce of the boards," Hursh said, "and I was able to beat the defenseman wide."
Nate Nomeland (Fargo, N.D.) got the start in goal and stopped 29 shots, including 12 in the first period, when the Purple Eagles scored their lone goal. Scott Crawford scored his second of the season on the power play at 3:02 of the first period.
Late in the second period Princeton was being outshot 18-1 for the game. The Tigers recorded only one shot in the first period and were held without a shot until after the 17-minute mark of the second period. Despite the low shot total, the Tigers had two breakaways, but freshman Thomas Colclough (Holbrook, Mass.) shot wide on shorthanded attempt, and David Del Monte (Mississauga, Ont.) was stopped by Bonk.
"It was ugly," coach Len Quesnelle said, "but we battled back. We had a tough time with our breakout early in the game." Eight freshmen were dressed, and Princeton's youth was evident as the Tigers struggled early. "We had difficulty moving the puck when we were under pressure," Quesnelle said.
Nomeland made a key save on Randy Harris' shot from the slot with less than three minutes remaining in regulation, and Brad Parsons slid to block a shot from between the circles with five seconds left in the third period. Nomeland also stopped Harris from the right face-off circle in overtime.
Chris Corrinet's (Greenfield, Mass.) shot from the right face-off dot almost broke the tie with two minutes remaining in the third, but Bonk made a pad save.
Perhaps it's a good sign that the Tigers can play poorly, yet still garner a point. Princeton was shorthanded again, as seniors Kirk Lamb (injury), Shane Campbell (personal reasons), Ethan Doyle (injury) and Peter Zavodny (injury) were out of the lineup.
"We got a little stronger as the game went on," Corrinet said. "We made some mental mistakes in the beginning. I think that we can take something from this weekend and build on it," Corrinet said of the three points the Tigers took from Niagara in the two-game series.
Princeton is now 1-0-1 on the season, while Niagara is 1-4-3.
New weekend Princeton will open its ECAC schedule with home games against Clarkson (Nov. 10) and St. Lawrence (Nov. 11). Both games begin at 7 p.m.
