Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Princeton University wrestling team came within a takedown of a sweep weekend, but it ended with a win over Waynesburg and a tough one-point loss to Duquesne.
The 29-18 victory was a team effort. The Tigers won five straight matches between the 149-pound and 184-pound classes. Jeff Bernd pinned Matt Queen in 4:36, cutting an 18-9 deficit to 18-15. That win gave the Tigers some much-needed momentum. Albert Pendleton and Greg Parker followed with wins, giving the Tigers a 24-18 lead. Scott Pasquini put the match out of reach with a technical fall over Jamie Pradera.
The match started at 184 pounds, where Anthony DeBartolo opened the match with an exciting 3-2 win over Steve Kinley. DeBartolo opened the Duquesne match with a 3-1 victory, but the Dukes took four of the next five matches to take a 12-6 lead. Jeff Bernd pinned Erick Glass at 2:53 to even the score at 12-12, but wins by Bill Boeh and Mack Rohaly gave the match to Duquesne.
