PRINCETON, N.J. - The highlight of the day was supposed to be the dedication ceremony of the Class of 1958 Wrestling Room, located on the bottom floor of Jadwin Gym. The state-of-the-art practice facility will give Princeton an added boost as it attempts to get back into the upper echelon of the Ivy League.
As it turns out, the Tigers almost made that jump on Saturday. They were tied 15-15 with Penn, the league champions, with only three matches remaining. The Quakers won out and took the match 30-15, but it was another example of how Princeton is getting closer and closer to the rest of the competition.
Princeton went 1-2 on the day, defeating Sacred Heart 38-8 and losing to Penn 30-15 and losing to George Mason 21-15. Freshman Greg Parker won all three of his matches, including a 10-3 win over Penn's Joe Nastasi. Other winners in the match against Penn were Marc Steyer (125), Joe Clarke (141) and Jeff Bernd (149).
The victory over Sacred Heart was a total team effort, as eight different Tigers won matches. Albert Pendleton (157) and Justin Dodulik (Hwt) scored pins to lead the rout. The Tigers almost won two matches, but couldn't hold on against a tough George Mason squad.
The day ended with the dedication of the Class of 1958 room. Led by athletic director Gary Walters '67, one of the finest wrestling facilities in the nation will now be utilized by the Tigers.
