PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton stayed in the race for home ice in the ECAC with a 4-1 comeback win over Brown Saturday night in front of 2,178 at Baker Rink. The win temporarily puts Princeton in a four-way tie for third place in the ECAC, although the Tigers could be in fourth if Cornell beats Dartmouth tomorrow.
The Tigers started slowly and gave up a goal by James Duval at 12:51 of the period. Ironically, that goal seemed to arouse the Tigers' spirits.
Kirk Lamb took a lead pass from Shane Campbell and beat Scott Stirling 15 seconds after Brown's goal to tie the score. Princeton never looked back after that.
"It's almost like getting two goals when you can get a goal back that quickly," Lamb said. "The other team gets deflated."
Lamb deflated the Bears even more with a power-play goal at 8:52 of the second period. The goal, which came off an assist from Chris Corrinet, stood as the game winner. Benoit Morin gave the Tigers all the insurance they would need with a pair of goals. He scored at 16:29 of the second period when he stole the puck and scored on a 3-on-1 breakaway. He added a late tally at 17:41 of the final period to ice the game.
Princeton is .500 and tied for third place with Cornell, Clarkson and Rensselaer. If Cornell defeats Dartmouth, the Tigers will be in a three-way tie for fourth. If the Big Green win, Dartmouth will take Cornell's spot in the tie for third place.
Either way, it's a math major's dream come true. The scenarios are endless, but Princeton knows that two wins will likely bring the ECAC postseason back to Baker Rink. The playoffs start Mar. 10.
The Ivy League race is still up for grabs. Harvard defeated Yale and stands a point ahead of Princeton, but the Crimson's league season is complete. A win or tie at Cornell on the season's final day will bring a second straight Ivy League banner to Baker Rink.
Princeton starts the crucial final weekend at Starr Rink against second-place Colgate on Friday night. Princeton defeated the Red Raiders 5-1 earlier this season at Baker Rink. Colgate and St. Lawrence are the only two teams alive for the regular-season title and the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
