Late Rally Not Enough As Softball Team Gets Swept By Iowa State

Tallahassee, Fla. - Princeton's first doubleheader of its spring break trip resulted in a disappointing sweep at the hands of Iowa State.
Game one opened with a five-run outburst by Iowa State in the top of the first inning. Princeton got one of those runs back when Vicki Siesta singled in Kim Veenstra in the bottom of the first. Iowa State added one run in the second and two in the fourth and held on for a comfortable 8-3 victory.
Princeton had nine hits--four by Veenstra. The sophomore shortstop also scored two of the Tigers' three runs.Vicki Siesta and Lauren Poniatowski each had two hits. The second game was anything but comfortable, as both teams traded big innings during a 10-9 thriller that Iowa State won in eight innings. After the Cyclones led 4-0 after two innings, Princeton rallied for three runs in the third. Devon Keefe had the key hit, driving in two runs on a single.
Iowa State immediately got the three runs back in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-3 lead. Princeton cut the lead to 7-6 in the top of the fourth inning on a Keefe base-clearing triple to right field, knocking in Siesta, Poniatowski and Lori Volker.
The score remained 7-6 until the top of the seventh when the Cyclones intentionally walked Veenstra to load the bases with two outs. The decision backfired as Poniatowski drilled a triple over the right fielders head, driving in three runs to give Princeton a 9-7 lead.
Iowa State countered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and won the game on an RBI single by captain Lisa Frank in the bottom of the eighth.
Brie Galicinao took the loss. She pitched 5.1 innings, giving up four earned runs while striking out three batters.
Princeton's next doubleheader is tomorrow, March 14, beginning at noon against Northern Iowa.
