Tallahassee, Fla. - For the third time this season, the Princeton softball team rallied for a much-needed victory. After dropping a tight 2-1 decision in the first game of today's doubleheader against Northern Iowa, the Tigers rallied for two runs in the sixth inning and two runs in the eighth inning for a 4-3 win in the second game. It is the team's first win during its annual spring trip to Tallahassee, Fla.
Princeton was in danger of a second straight sweep as it trailed Northern Iowa 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lori Volker walked with one out. After Kim Veenstra lined out to left field, Lauren Poniatowski seemingly ended the inning when she grounded the ball to third base. An error by first baseman Allison Taverner allowed Poniatowski to reach third while Volker scored. Vicki Siesta popped a ball up that was misplayed by the catcher, allowing Poniatowski to score the tying run. After a scoreless seventh inning, Northern Iowa scored one run in the top of the eighth inning. The Tigers put two runners in scoring position thanks to a two-strike double by Lizzy Callaway. Lori Volker ended the game with a two-run double down the right field line, scoring Callaway and Erin Valocsik.
Game one was a tense pitching dual. Sarah Peterman, who got the victory in the second game after pitching the eighth inning, gave up a two-run single to Heidi Freitanger in the fourth inning, the only two runs the senior ace would allow. Her offense could only make up half of the deficit, though. Brie Galicinao singled in Lauren Poniatowski for the lone Princeton run in the sixth inning.
Princeton plays a doubleheader against Florida State Wednesday at 5 p.m.
