PALO ALTO, CALIF - It did not take Eva Petschnigg (Fr., Koblenz, Germany) very long to start building a r?sum? of honors and accolades at Princeton. In her first NCAA Fencing Championship, the freshman added another prestigious accomplishment--a national title. Petschnigg defeated top-seeded Monique de Bruin of Stanford 15-13 to win the women's foil individual crown at the 2000 NCAA Fencing Championship held at Maples Pavilion on the campus of Stanford University this weekend.
In the round-robin competition, Petschnigg won 18 of 23 bouts (five-touch), placing her third. With the top four moving on to bracket play for two 15-touch bouts, Petschnigg topped No. 2 seed Charlotte Walker (Penn State) 15-14 in the semifinal to advance to the championship bout. Stanford's de Bruin, who won all 23 bouts in round-robin play, defeated Petschnigg 5-4 on the first day of competition.
The freshman took full advantage the second time around and avenged the previous loss with a 15-13 win, giving her the individual national championship. It was the first individual title for the women's program and the first for Princeton since Max Pekarev '99 won the men's sabre championship in 1996.
In the team competition, the Tigers currently stand in third place with 77 total points, only one point behind St. John's. The men's competition begins today and will conclude tomorrow, March 26.
In other women's competition, Lindsay Campbell (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) won 17 bouts for a sixth place finish in ?p?e, while classmate Maya Lawrence (Teaneck, N.J.) took eighth. Freshman Mindy Rostal (Maplewood, Minn.) finished in ninth place in the foil event. In the first year of official competition for sabre, Alexa Chew (Jr., Winston-Salem, N.C.) finished 20th, while Ibby Caputo (Fr., Belle Mead, N.J.) took 22nd-place.
