PRINCETON, N.J. - Anna Soper (Fr., Marysville, Wash.) hit her first career home run, a two-run blast in the fourth inning, to lead Princeton to a 5-0 win in the second game of today's doubleheader against Rutgers at Class of 1895 Field. The win ensured a split against the Scarlet Knights, who needed eight innings to defeat Princeton 6-2 in the first game.
Princeton led 3-0 in the second game before Soper's blast put the game out of reach for the Scarlet Knights. The Tigers got their first three runs in the third inning on three hits and two Rutgers errors. Lizzy Callaway (Fr., Houston, Tx.) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second when Lori Volker (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) reached on an error. Callaway scored on a single by Kim Veenstra (So., Hawthorne, N.J.) and an error by first baseman Kelly Crosson. A sacrifice fly by Lauren Poniatowski (Jr., Haddon Heights, N.J.) and an RBI groundout by Vicki Siesta (Jr., W. Milford, N.J.) led to the other two runs. Brie Galicinao (Jr., Stockton, Calif.) led off the fourth inning with a double to left field and scored on Soper's towering shot that sailed over the centerfield fence. Galicinao pitched six innings of one-hit, shutout ball before the game was called for darkness. She struck out three batters and walked none.
Princeton led the first game 1-0 in the fifth inning on a RBI single by Mackenzie Forsythe (Fr., Lake Oswego, Ore.). Rutgers took the lead on a two-run home run by shortstop Debbie DeJong in the top of the sixth inning, but the Tigers got the run back on an error by DeJong in the bottom of the inning. Rutgers erupted for four runs in the eighth inning and held on for the 6-3 win.
Sarah Peterman (Sr., Davis, Calif.) took the loss despite striking out a season-high 10 batters and allowing only six hits and four earned runs. Poniatowski was the only Tiger with a multi-hit game, including an RBI double for Princeton's only run in the eighth inning.
Princeton will travel to UMass-Amherst for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon. The Tigers won't host a doubleheader until it opens the 2000 Ivy League season with a tilt against Brown on Saturday, April 8 at 1 p.m.
