COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After seeing her team rally from a 6-0 deficit to tie La Salle 6-6, Devon Keefe wasn't about to let this game slip away. With the bases loaded in the sixth inning, a simple base hit would have secured a victory and a split at the Princeton Invitational.
Keefe drilled a grand slam.
The Princeton Tigers (2-2) left the Terrapin Invitational feeling pretty good about themselves after overcoming a bad first inning for a dramatic 10-6 win. Keefe went 2-for-3 with two runs and five RBIs to lead the Tigers. Mackenzie Forsythe had two RBIs after hitting a two-run home run in the second inning. It was the freshman's first collegiate hit. Anna Soper also had two RBIs. Sarah Peterman got her second win of the season after pitching a scoreless sixth inning. She pitched 13 innings over the weekend and didn't allow an earned run.
"We played pretty well for our first weekend," coach Cindy Cohen said after the Tigers completed a 2-2 weekend at Maryland. "Sarah Peterman had a great weekend. There were moments when we looked like a great team out there and there were moments when we looked like it was our first weekend."
One of the moments when the Tigers looked good was the sixth inning. Sarah Peterman started the inning with a walk. Lauren Poniatowski reached on an error by shortstop Winter Eastmond and Kim Veenstra walked to load the bases. Keefe ended the game by hitting a pitch by loser Missy Rorke over the fence.
La Salle jumped ahead early by scoring six runs off starter Sarah Jane White, who missed much of her freshman year with an injury. Brie Galicinao pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing the Tigers to get back into the game. She initiated the rally by scoring Lori Volker on a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
Princeton scored five runs in the second inning. After a walk to Poniatowski, Veenstra reached on an error. Keefe scored Poniatowski with a single and advanced to second on the throw home. Soper doubled to right center, scoring two more runs. Forsythe followed with a home run to tie the score at 6-6. Rorke came in to relieve starter Talia Bilella and got La Salle out of the inning. Neither team would score again until the final swing of the game.
Princeton is off until Sunday, Mar. 12, when it starts its spring break trip with a doubleheader against Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Fla.
