Weekend One-Timers
The Thrill of Victory - Princeton (1998) and Clarkson (1999) represent the last two ECAC champions. The Agony of Defeat - In two of the last three seasons, Princeton's hopes of an ECAC championship were ended by a loss to Clarkson. In the other season, Clarkson's bid for an ECAC championship ended in a loss to Princeton.
Familiar faces -- For the fourth consecutive season, Princeton and Clarkson will meet in the ECAC postseason. This is the first time that the two teams have met in a first-round series. Of the eleven games these teams have played since the 1996-97 season, there are two endings that are particularly memorable...
Apps-olutely clutch - Princeton defeated Clarkson 5-4 to claim the 1998 ECAC championship when Syl Apps '99 scored on a wrister under a minute into the second overtime period. The goal gave Princeton its first ECAC championship and its first trip to the NCAA tournament.
From way downtown, bang! - Clarkson exacted some revenge on Princeton by defeating the Tigers 6-5 in the ECAC semifinal last year. The Golden Knights saw leads of 4-0 and 5-3 evaporate into a 5-5 tie with just seconds left in regulation before defenseman Willie Mitchell stunned the Olympic Arena with a missile from center ice that bounced off the glove of goaltender Craig Bradley and trickled into the net with 2.3 seconds remaining.
Four for Four - Princeton's senior class of Chris Barber, Brad Meredith, Benoit Morin and Darren Yopyk are looking to become the first class in Princeton history to play in the ECAC semifinals in each of their four seasons.
Four for Four II - Princeton has won its last four first-round series, dating back to a 2-1 win at Brown in the 1994-95 season. The Tigers lost a preliminary game at Brown in the 1995-96 season.
Class-ic success -- The Class of 2000 continues to build on its record-setting careers at Princeton. The current senior class has been part of 66 victories, more than any other hockey class in school history.
Partial credit - The ECAC preseason coaches poll ranked Clarkson as the favorite and Princeton in 11th place. If you factor Vermont out of the poll and bump everybody below the Catamounts up one spot, this would have been one of the five postseason matchups.
Five alive - If Princeton wins this series and there is no more than one other upset, the Tigers would play in the Final Five game for the third consecutive year. The ECAC started playing this game in 1998, so it has never been played without Princeton. The Tigers are 2-0 in the game.
New York State of Mind - The entire ECAC postseason will be played in New York. Each of the first-round series are hosted by Empire State teams while the Final Five is annually played in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Opening night - Princeton goaltender Dave Stathos won his first career game at Cheel Arena when the Tigers defeated Clarkson 4-3 early in the 1998-99 season.
Oh captain, my captain -- Senior Darren Yopyk broke his leg during a loss against Harvard two weekends ago and will not be able to play the rest of the season.
Triple A -- After captain Darren Yopyk broke his leg, seniors Benoit Morin, Brad Meredith and Chris Barber were each given the assistant's `A' to wear on their jerseys.
Mmm Mmm Good Timing - Junior Shane Campbell scored the game-tying goal against Clarkson with 24 seconds remaining in regulation of the first meeting between the two teams this season.
No strength at even-strength - In the loss at Clarkson this season, Princeton scored a power-play goal and a shorthanded goal but could not score an even-strength goal. Princeton has had at least one even-strength goal in each game after that (nine consecutive games).
Lamb Chops - Princeton junior Kirk Lamb is the leading scorer in this series. He has eight goals and 20 assists for 28 points. He has three assists in the two games against Clarkson this year.
Brad Parsons Project - Sophomore Brad Parsons leads the team with 11 goals. He has had three multiple-goal games, including a hat trick in a win at Rensselaer. Parsons was named ECAC Player of the Week after that game.
A Capital issue - Junior Chris Corrinet, who was selected by the Washington Capitals in the 1998 Entry Draft, is second on the team with nine goals. He has not scored a goal in seven games, though, and has only one assist in five games.
Century times three - Princeton senior Benoit Morin, the unofficial career leader in penalty minutes at Old Nassau, is the only player ever to record at least 100 penalty minutes in three consecutive seasons.
Third and goal - Princeton has scored 25 goals in the final period of ECAC games, tied for second most in the league (Colgate, 36). Conversely, Princeton has allowed 26 goals in the final period of ECAC games, tied for second most in the league (Union, 32).
Beaney babies - Freshmen defensemen Trevor Beaney, Neil McCann and forwards Scott Prime and George Parros will likely make their postseason debuts Friday night. Goaltender Nate Nomeland will likely back up Dave Stathos. Nomeland played two periods in the 5-2 loss at Clarkson this season.
