PRINCETON, N.J. - Lauren Poniatowski (Jr., Haddon Heights, N.J.) continued her superb weekend with five hits, including four in the first game of today's split with Cornell, as the Princeton University softball team put itself in position to claim at least a share of the Ivy championship next weekend.
Princeton rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first game to defeat the Big Red 16-4 in five innings. Poniatowski had four singles, scored three runs and drove in three more to lead the Tigers. Mackenzie Forsythe (Fr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Lori Volker (Jr., San Diego, Calif.), Devon Keefe (Jr., Winter Park, Fla.), Brie Galicinao (So., Stockton, Calif.) and Anna Soper (Fr., Marysville, Wash.) each had two hits in the game, including a solo home run by Soper in the third inning that hit a cameraman behind the centerfield fence. Dana Freiser (So., Walnut Creek, Calif.) got the win after pitching 3.1 innings in relief of Sarah Peterman (Sr., Davis, Calif.), who allowed four hits and three runs in the first two innings, including a two-run home run by Annette Sheppard. Freiser allowed only one hit, a solo home run by Eva Nohorniak, and struck out four batters to register her third win of the season.
Cornell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game when Soper misplayed Kristen Hricenak's single in leftfield. The error, one of three by Soper and one of five by the Tigers, allowed Drew Martin and Christina Trout to score. Cornell scored three more runs in the fourth inning and added one on a home run by Hricenak in the fifth inning. Princeton scored its only run in the second inning when Galicinao scored on an error by Cornell third baseman Hricenak.
Galicinao, who pitched a perfect game yesterday at the University of Pennsylvania, allowed six hits and two earned runs in the loss.
Princeton (17-19, 6-2 Ivy) will host Hofstra in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Class of 1895 Field. The Tigers will complete their Ivy League schedule next weekend with doubleheaders at Dartmouth and Harvard. If Princeton can sweep both opponents, it would be guaranteed at least a share of its 13th Ivy League championship.
