Amherst, Mass. - It took a while to develop, but once the bats started hitting, there was no stopping them.
The Princeton softball team was three outs away from a disappointing sweep at the hands of the University of Massachusetts, who was playing its first game at its new softball complex. After handing the Tigers a 5-2 loss in the first game, the Minutewomen led 3-0 going into the final frame.
Sarah Jane White and Anna Soper hit back-to-back doubles to start the rally. Devon Keefe nearly gave Princeton the lead when she hit a single against the fence with the bases loaded. Instead, one run scored and the floodgates opened. Lori Volker was hit by a pitch with two strikes to send home the second run and set up the biggest at-bat of the day. Kim Veenstra drilled an offering by Carrie Jeffries to the left-centerfield fence, clearing the bases for a 5-3 lead. Dana Freiser, pitching her first innings of the season against Massachusetts, secured her first win by allowing only one run before inducing a double play to end the game.
In the first game of the day, Veenstra and Lauren Poniatowski had two hits apiece, but the Tigers couldn't recover from a three-run home run by Teri Rooney. Sarah Peterman took the loss despite giving up only one earned run on the afternoon.
Princeton will travel to St. Peter's on Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
