PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton jumped out to a 2-0 start in the Ivy League and head coach Cindy Cohen recorded her 550th victory as the softball team escaped with a pair of one-run thrillers against Brown University today at Class of 1895 Field.
Sarah Peterman (Sr., Davis, Calif.) pitched her best game of the season in the opener, striking out eight batters while allowing only five hits and no runs in a 1-0 nine-inning shutout. Two of the hits came in the ninth inning, when Brown loaded the bases with two outs. Peterman induced a pop-up by Megan Nicolay to end the rally.
It would be Peterman's last pitch of the game. Devon Keefe (Jr., Winter Park, Fla.) opened the ninth inning with a walk and a stolen base. She advanced to third base on a single by Brie Galicinao (So., Stockton, Calif.) and scored the winning run on a groundout to third by Anna Soper (Fr., Marysville, Wash.). Keefe waited until third baseman Liz Lefler made the throw before charging home and slid just past the tag of catcher Sara Rowbottom for the win. Princeton jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a four-run rally in the fourth inning. Keefe reached on an error and advanced to second on a single by Galicinao. Sarah Jane White (So., Winter Park, Fla.) sacrificed the runners into scoring position with a bunt. Soper drove home Keefe with a single through the left side and Mackenzie Forsythe (Fr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) scored Galicinao on a single down the leftfield line. Lori Volker (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) drove home Soper on an RBI groundout and Forsythe scored on an error, giving Princeton the 4-0 lead.
Brown rallied with four runs in the sixth inning. A trio of Princeton errors combined with a pair of extra base hits by Tami Parrott and Liz Lefler helped Brown get back in the game. Dana Freiser (So., Walnut Creek, Calif.) relieved Galicinao and forced Erin Durlesser to ground out to end the inning. The score remained 4-4 until the bottom of the seventh when Volker bunted for a single to lead off the inning. She stole second and reached third on a groundout by Poniatowski. Vicki Siesta (Jr., W. Milford, N.J.) hit a groundball that was misplayed by second baseman Julia Iudicello to score Volker for the winning run.
Princeton will host Yale University in a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1 p.m.
