CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Princeton University softball team needed two wins at Harvard and lots of help to get back into the Ivy League race. After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game, things seemed like they might just finally fall into place for the Tigers.
Unfortunately, the Tigers weren't able to put the Crimson away early. Princeton couldn't build on its 1-0 lead after leaving five runners on base in the first four innings. By the bottom of the fourth inning, the Crimson started to solve starter Brie Galicinao, who gave up three runs on five hits and an error in the inning. Harvard added three more in the fifth inning and held on for a 6-2 win.
Lauren Poniatowski went 2-for-2 and had two of the Tigers' three hits, Kim Veenstra had the other hit. Lori Volker scored two runs, one on a RBI groundout by Galicinao and one on Poniatowski's fifth-inning single. Galicinao pitched 4.1 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out five batters. Sarah Peterman pitched in relief, allowing one hit over 1.2 innings. The second game started off significantly worse than the opener. After the Tigers went down in order in the top of the first inning, Tiffany Whitton opened the bottom of the first with a solo home run off starter Dana Freiser. Freiser, Sarah Jane White and Peterman each pitched in the 9-1, five-inning loss. Galicinao and Vicki Siesta were the only Tigers to get a hit in the second game.
Princeton will host Drexel in a doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m.
